Hints For Starting Your Persuasive Essay

Starting an essay off is often the most difficult part, and that’s true of persuasive essays as well. However, there are some simple things you can do to ensure that you get your essay started off on the right foot. A strong start usually makes for a well-written essay, so why not do things right from the get-go?

Choosing a Topic

Choosing a topic is the most important stage for many persuasive essays, because how a writer argues their thesis is directly related to their feelings on the topic, the amount of information available about it, and the general opinions readers have toward it. Here’s what you should consider when choosing a topic for your persuasive essay:

  • Variety of perspectives
  • While some writers like to choose very controversial, hot button topics for their essays, this isn’t always the best strategy. Instead, simply choosing a topic about which there are a variety of informed opinions may be better. Overly controversial topics are frequently plagued by emotionally driven opinions, which don’t hold up well when trying to support a thesis.

  • Choose an interesting topic
  • Of course, your topic should be one that interests the audience, but it also needs to be one that interests the writer! While it’s always a good idea to choose subjects you’re passionate about, it’s especially true of writing a persuasive essay. You’re far more likely to come across as persuasive when you have sincerely held beliefs on the topic, even if you’re writing from a different perspective. Topics you’re apathetic about are rarely a good choice for writing a persuasive essay.

Writing Your Thesis Statement

A clear thesis statement will ease you through the rest of the essay writing process. To formulate a great thesis statement for a persuasive essay, keep the following three things in mind:

  1. What is the position you plan to defend?
  2. What is the most likely position a disagreeing reader is likely to hold?
  3. What are three key points you will use to change the reader’s mind?

You don’t need to include all of your main points of defense in your thesis directly, but you should know what they are before writing the thesis statement so that it will make sense in context with them later.

Create an Outline

As students become more familiar with essay writing, they are often all too tempted to skip the outline process. However, few things will help you get off to a stronger start than a well planned outline!
